DANA POINT, Calif. (AP) — Hundreds of surfers and rowers have honored Hobie Alter's request by paddling out in the Pacific in his memory.
Alter, who died in March at age 80, revolutionized surfing by developing the foam surfboard that was lightweight and maneuverable. He was also credited with bringing masses to the water with his "Hobie Cat" sailboat.
On Friday, the Orange County Register reports (http://bit.ly/1iyTo5C ) his family released bowls filled with soil brought from Hawaii, ocean water and sand from Waikiki Beach and rock salt.
During the Hawaiian paddle-out ceremony, surfers splashed water to the sky. The Orange County Harbor Patrol boat sprayed water, creating a rainbow.
Alter was memorialized on Huntington Beach's Surfing Walk of Fame in 1997 and enshrined in the National Sailing Hall of Fame in 2011.
Tatiana is a surfer that is sponsored by BodyGlove, Smith Optics, Boardstix, StickyBumps, Vertra, Tim Carroll/Justice Surfboards.

Tatiana Weston-Webb Wins Gold at VISSLA ISA World JR Championships
Body Glove would like to congratulate Tati Weston-Webb on her Gold Medal win in the VISSLA ISA World JR Championships this past weekend. The event was held in Salinas, Ecuador and featured great waves and the level of surfing was second to none.
Tati defended her gold metal for girls under 18 division and posted the highest total score of the entire event, 18.16. She also, earned the highest single wave score in the girls division with a 9.83. Tati was also a member of the gold medal winning Hawaii team, which beat 32 other National Teams for the win.
“I want to thank my family back at home and from all over the world, you are the best! And the family that I have here in Ecuador is unbelievable,” states Tati. “I watched the waves from earlier heats and also I watched Mahina win, just like last year, so I got super pumped from that. The waves were on my front hand and I always have so much fun on those waves. I just want to thank the ISA for having such a great venue and put on such a spectacular event. I can’t wait to come here maybe as a coach or as a Hawaii Team Member, helping the young kids surf. I just can’t be thankful enough.”

Surfing is not for everyone but for sure for this amazing girl. Jay Z Christ. It’s a high-stakes game, ain’t it… Yeah, but that’s big-wave surfing when it’s 80-feet in the shorebreak, a beach break. I remember Dorian telling me in another interview how rad the joint is, how creepy… Yeah, yeah. It’s really hectic. We had been training here a couple of weeks so we had the idea that it was going to be really, really gnarly when things got really big. But, honestly, you know, it was our first time ever here at that size. We got out there and we knew we had just a short window and we didn’t want to waste it. I was the first on the rope and I told Carlos, “Hey, just go for broke. Get me one wave and I’ll be happy with one wave”. So that was our goal, you know. One big wave each. And, unfortunately, my wave didn’t go so well but his wave was very successful and I’m still here so I’m happy. You had another near-death thang at Teahupoo, yeah? Um, to be honest, I must put down that experience a little bit after this one. I don’t think it was that bad… But only with the benefit of hindsight… Yeah, I think this one was way more serious. People say I was unconscious at Teahupoo, and I wasn’t at all, I told everyone I wasn’t, but a lot of people claim that I was unconscious and it was a lie. But this time… I was unconscious. Big-wave wrangling is an extraordinary biz… You know, it’s a risk when you’re willing to surf waves like that and you don’t have two people to rescue you, you only have one. I was by myself on 70, 80-foot waves for over 10 minutes. And it’s very very hard to survive with no life jacket. I was going to ask if this had affected your desire to stomp big waves. But y’sound so breezy it ain’t even a question is it… Nooo! I’m really bummed I have a broken foot and I’m out for two months! But it was a great experience. We had the lineup to ourselves and Garrett, who’s a hero to me, (France’s) Eric Rebiere, (Briton) Andrew Cotton, it was a really good vibe. Everyone was looking out for one another and that’s what big-wave surfing is all about. We were like kids out there. We were so stoked to get out there and see the waves that big and… you know… go out and have the opportunity to do something special

The definition of resilience might as well include the name Bethany Hamilton.
On Thursday, eleven years after losing her left arm during a shark attack, the inspirational 24-year-old won the Surf-N-Sea Pipeline Women's Pro, a major event in the realm of women's surfing.
Her inspirational story became the basis for the Hollywood film “Soul Surfer,” and these days she travels the world surfing big waves and doing church and charity work for victims of traumatic injuries. She likes to surf Pipeline even on heavy days when she has to compete for waves with a large crowd.
Surfing with one arm is challenging; surfing Pipeline with one arm is simply amazing. Her strong, powerful surfing in the 3- to 4-foot waves at the famous Banzai Pipeline in Hawaii gave her a commanding win over her competitors. While the waves weren’t huge, Hamilton noted they were “better than most waves I surf all over the world in contests.”
Hi, my name is Cynthia, and I’m a surf addict.
My addiction began over seven years ago, when I rode a gentle knee-high wave on a waterlogged 10′ foam surfboard in Florida. I was instantly, irreversibly hooked on the feeling. I bought my first surfboard the next day, and spent the summer floundering around in the ocean, teaching myself to surf. My occasional wave-riding successes fueled my addiction and kept me coming back for more. Even an inland move to the upper West Coast, where the 48° ocean was almost three hours away, could not dissuade me. I bought a thick wetsuit and made the trek on weekends whenever possible, which wasn’t often enough. Serious water time at a week-long surf camp in Costa Rica fueled the fire. Then nearly five years ago, I moved to NorCal, a mere 50 miles from the real Surf City, U.S.A., and began to surf regularly about twice a week, the most family and work commitments will allow. It’s close to the minimum needed to sustain my habit. If I’m out of the water for anything approaching a week, I start jonesin’ – needing a fix bad.
